Hydrocarbon waxes are particularly polluting for the snowpack and leave residues that also pollute the water table.
In every ski area the worst pollutants are due to: plastics (objects lost or abandoned by skiers such as bottles, pole washers, synthetic clothing and various types of pocket objects including glasses and mobile phones), microplastics (pieces of base, pieces of broken or abandoned slalom poles and flaking of ski and ski boot coverings), hydraulic oil lost from the hydraulic systems of snow groomers and last but not least the hydrocarbon residues of ski waxes left on the snow cover. Finally, from today there are new products of natural origin and biodegradable much less impactful than waxes derived from hydrocarbons.
